Created & Facilitated a customized Program ‘Projecting your most Authentic Self by understanding the subtle nuances of how Perception Management works’  for a 60 woman employees of fb India & a few other regions on the occasion of ‘Women@facebook (India)’.

Objective of this session:

How through the setting of context & by the understanding of ‘Situational Awareness’, women can use the finer understandings of Non-Verbal & Verbal Communication to effectively counter the subtle & not so subtle dismissive behavior exhibited by certain male clients.

Typical Scenarios that were discussed:

  • Male clients out of discomfort, intimidation or just indifference, only choosing to making eye contact with other male colleagues & not including the woman present in the meeting.
  • Not including the women colleagues on cc mail post the meeting –so as to not keep them in the loop
  • Talking over the woman when she tries to make a point. Cutting her short. Using overt & covert body language of aggression. Trying to prove a point.
  • Exhibiting closed body language non-verbal gestures like steeple gesture, folding hands high on chest, bodily not facing her etc.

The reasons for such behavior such as the above are manifold. Upbringing, a deep-rooted mentality that develops over the years, the messages & cues men pick up from their own environment, cinema –portrayal of the sexes, picking up from sexist behavior in their own environment etc/

Keeping with the theme- Women Empowerment picks up great momentum in our country & is as much the need of the hour as it is a modern day necessity. Women ought to be given their due in the workplace for the significant impact they are making in almost every field.

The problem & what we addressed at the workshop:

Some of the brightest minds of the fairer sex were in attendance. It was a day where the women who contribute significantly to the social media giant facebook’s success were celebrated in style.

Having said that, even when it comes to urban India, we still have a strong undercurrent of the patriarchal culture even at the work place. The reasons of this are manifold & the best way to actually deal with women empowerment would be to address the issue from its root. The best way would be is to look for a long term solution.

Having said that & acknowledging the long term solution, here, we looked at quick ways using a heightened awareness of Situational Awareness & the understanding of non-Verbal and Verbal Communication in tandem, we spoke of specific situations where a woman could establish her presence & be able to gain ground despite the situation.

A Happy Client:
I was pretty good at what I did but somewhere I felt I was lacking on the appearance front. I had slightly neglected it & felt the need for a ‘make over. Kurush was highly recommended & I decided to consult him. He made me understand that was needed was ‘Thought Over’ more than a ‘make over’. As in, you cannot just style your-self and expect changes. He made me realize how my appearance was definitely a perception creator or breaker but how we also addressed the situational awareness, body language & even certain behavioural traits. I went looking to enhance my appearance & I ended up with Enhancing overall VALUE. I humbly request anyone looking only for a ‘make over’ please consider Kurush’s ‘Thought Over- An Insightful Make-Over program’. And he customizes to the tee.

So what do we do as it is a living reality that women, not just in rural India but in some of our finest cities of India?

What some men typically do when in a meeting?
Only look and talk to other men and not even glance or acknowledge HER presence. Now, these are not always ‘bad’ or ‘vicious’ men, these are just afraid or men who haven’t cozied up to the idea that women exist & thrive in the workplace. The reasons for this like I earlier mentioned best handled going to the root- upbringing, domestic environment, early impressions etc.

What we must understand that funnily most of these are merely reactions to a certain intimidation felt. The intimation could come from a body language or dressing making HIM wary.  It may come across as down- right snobbery amongst a host of other things. We as men & women need to sit across the table and understand that we are not all that different. It more an imagination of our minds.
